First slide

Wooowyyy it is done. The slide show is finished and the text is send for translation into Portuguese.
The slide will also form the pages of a booklet with additional information.
The website has been updated and the Land Art Forest is life, the first person stands on the list.

The hardest was to shift through  all them photos and than to find the words with it. The slides will be shared here so yours all can be a part of it even if you are on the other site of the world.
Each week one slide will be shown here:

It is a photo from Almond blossom with the reflection of the Almond tree in the raindrop.
You might recognise the words.

BackGround

Something a bit different.

In the progress of making a slideshow for the exhibition, sort of powerpoint. The slides are made with photos and text and at times there is a need for some neutral background instead of blinding white.

SO

The camera became a paintbrush with at times good results even from the 230 shots just 5 are suitable.

Paper

The ideas around the exhibition taking more shape. Paper forms a part of one of the two ideas that will come to fruition.

Paper Web

Paper Web

Most photos will cover the paper, this time the paper will cover the photos. Paper relates to trees and nature. We can make paper from different material not just wood pulp, you don’t even need to cut the tree to get the pulp.
The making of the paper by myself did pass by. A trip to the art supply shop followed.

Plant Paper

Plant Paper

It is for sure they have better paper than i will ever been able to make. The touch of the paper must be right, not smooth but rough. Yet, the looks must be plain so not to take away the eye from the photos.

Recycled paper

Keep in mind the environmental impact of paper. So 4 sheets of paper are here to experiment with to make a final decision.
It all depends how the paper will act with the drop technic i want to use.
The idea came from accidental art, art that just happens but is not planned.

paperkrijtdrop

Letting a drop of water run over paper with pigment and see what comes out.
The next department in de shop was, pigments and well earth pigments.
The roots of the tree stand in earth even touching stones and rocks. Trees need water and water need trees, hence the drop of water.
The earth pigments were used for early art, cave art many might have washed away some stayed.
It will be a new challenge to learn how to make paint from ground sources, it fits better within the picture of Land Art.

paperburnedwood

Charcoal will come in as well, willow charcoal and chalk, Dover chalk.
The next few weeks will be dedicated to messy experiments to get the final image just about right.

The exhibition will not be filled with old photos or material. It will also not picture an image of the Land Art Forest.
Subtle connections will flow through the rhetoric of the exhibition.
Painting and photography have been in a kind of debate, taking opposite visions, here they will come together to form one.

Music will not come into the picture nor film that will only happen in the viewer mind.

Leaving details

As a part of an exhibition in 2010 with the title ‘GreenbloodRedblood’ i created some images.

In a forest lays the hidden reality, de verborgen werkelijkheid, realidade occult, Realiti cudd, versteckte Realität and so much more.
These photos are experiments with filters and framing the coming months there will be many more experiments.

The camera is fantastic in macro photos and has several possibilities for filters like: fisheye, sparkle, reflection, fragmented, pop art, soft focus, pale light colour, grainy film, pin hole, diorama, dramatic tone.
Not sure by any of them, it can give a mixed reality which i like to achieve in some way. Let the photos be in such a way that people look and wonder what is……….

There will be several series, several stories to tell and one will be the story of a leaf.

The way to show? Perhaps as a collage. Perhaps as a leaf. Not sure, i have plenty ideas.
The roaming balls, the hidden holes, the forgotten tunnel just to mention 3.

The dead leafs are on the path for just a few more weeks so no time for experiment more time for that one moment of seeing.

Land Art Conversation

The Land Art ‘movement’ never wrote a manifesto like other art movements. You can therefor find as many different definitions of Land Art as there are land art artists.

Land Art Poetry 'Crack'

Land Art Poem

The following definition inspired me into a new thinking in 2009:
“Land Art is a conversation with nature/landscape, questioning our (human) relationship with the land and nature, to articulate the experience of landscape and nature.”
Perhaps the conversation between me and nature became literal, in the meaning of actual, by writing with and in the landscape the feelings it aroused in me.

Land Art Poetry

There were it happens

An other much used definition comes from ‘Ben Tufnell’ in his book ‘Land Art’ :
– Land Art is the use of art to enact or articulate a direct, non-pictorial engagement with landscape and nature, or to re-order our response to place, landscape or nature.
The photos here are the documentation of the art but not the Land Art.
When you look at both definitions you see the word articulate, which means so much as expressing oneself ‘clearly’ or speaking ‘clearly’.
Expressing oneself has everything to do with putting in words or show an emotion.
Words do disappear like nature these days.

the disappearing of words

disappearing

My response: Nature does not discriminate what has made the land/ground, it doesn’t matter if mining or termites or even earthquakes made the ground. Constant change is a main principle, once gone nature comes back different.
As Land Art urges us to RE-examen our relationship with landscape and nature. Can we re-create landscape/nature or is it once gone, never come back?

Land Art Poetry Trail

TRAIL

I wanted to find out if we can re-create nature within a man made landscape.
To do this I had to let go of box thinking; culture, wild, environmentalism all belong to a box with a certain label. Human-made can be nature. The Land Art should not become moralising and certainly not a new box with attached new labels.

In this way I made ‘Vagdavercustis’ by having a conversation with nature and the landscape. I Re-examine my own relationship with nature and the landscape, seeing what we articulate, express put into words can become nature.

LOPE

LOPE not loop

If we walk or if we drive we see and experience landscape.

CHAOTIC ORDER

Back to expo thinking, there is no way you can fit a Land Art Forest into a gallery, so forget trying.
The exhibition will contain photos, but how and what keeps floating around in my little idea book.
Where is clear and the room with walls, doors and windows is clear, but the filling and connecting it to the Land Art Forest ……..

Flow

For one expo the photos are selected, the medium is still questionable, only need 5 photos there. These 5 will also be a new card serie.
The cards must sell so selection happens in an other way. My more artistic photos do not sell good enough.
The expo in Portugal will not be for sale, creating more freedom of artistic expression.

painted drop

Transport is an other issue to consider in the creative progress. Certain ideas dropped of as the small needs to fit inside a suitcase.
Printing a photo on a piece of paper feels not good, gives no expressiveness.
Macro photography seems the opposite of the Land Art Forest of 1 hectare, yet without that small world no forest.
It all starts with one drop.

How to display the beauty of the small to realise the big as we see so little. Our realities alter constantly, so many medias, so many ways.
The budged limits several options, such a pity, the imagination needs no funds but the realisation can’t happen without the dirty word, money.

Somehow some order will appear inside the chaos
one day it will happen
it will all come through

Centenary Tree

Centenary Pine Tree of Mazagon

Centenary Pine Tree of Mazagon

When you want to create an edible landscape you start with an edible kern, which you seed instead of eat.
During this festive season we eat plenty of edible nuts inclusief the Pine-nut.
In Europe and the middle east the most used pine nuts come from the Stone Pine also called Umbrella Pine. Some of the old tribes used to plant these trees for their edible nuts.

Stone pine

Crown

The above two photos are from the same tree found in Donana National Park in South West of Spain.
It shows you how a little pine nut can grow. One of the most spectacle trees around in this park,  yet the trunk is only 50 centimetres tall but the crown is 23 metres in diameter. The way this beauty grows prove some courage worth celebrating.
Sadly this beautiful area had a heatwave fuelling a big fire, consuming many edible seeds. The trees are known to have adapted for fire by creating a thick bark protecting the living centre of the trunk.
The fire might create a new spurge of life in this area, time will tell.

ice in the sunset

icicle

The time seems right to think about them trees we took inside to celebrate, what to do with them. A cut tree can only provide a short moment of pleasure, the best option than is to put it in a wood chipper to be used as ground cover.
Them trees in pots can be planted but many of them will not survive due to the wrong procedure.
They need to be harden of to get used to the cold outdoor again before we plant them.

xmas tree planting

hardening of

Just put them outdoors during the day and indoors in a cool room during the night. You can also put them on a balcony or even in an open window.
Next to this you need to keep them moist with a plant-sprayer filled with soft water.
After a few days you can repot it in a larger pot which you put outside or dig in partly in your garden, this way you don’t need to water it.
Next year you can dig it out again to celebrate again, after few years you should plant the tree in soil and let it grow big and strong.
When you replant it carefully loosen the roots all around so they can grow again. A very pot grown tree can’t be repotted but should be planted direct in the soil.

After this order some seeds of the Stone Pine so the next generation of Centenary Trees can start, year after year again.
Many seeds will create a forest.
Here you find some tips how to grow them.
Next year, i will visit this Centenary Tree in the hope it survived the fire and with me come some baby trees to be planted.
