Land Art Idea for a speciaal Land Art Poem
The beginning of a new Land Art Poetry project called ‘Stick Poetry’ by the river.
You will see !!!
slowly moving from silence night to
riverside canalised flowing over Bosch denture giving
childhood memos smell of tar mixed with wildrose eglanteria
daydreaming steering wheel fantasising imaginary
reality hits, river rat, rivergipsy
ship takes where they can’t hit
sounds of water hushing against hulling pressure
wooden shoes on iron decking, rope plopping
lets go where nobody knows
at riverside waking what was is gone to an other site
seeing in my mind
feet touching water
Egret flies <camera sink <feather touch
hello there look who’s back
changed sight changed side
it never stays while flowing away
little capsule herstory
sweet water delta Bosch, sheltering secret hidden
moving out after delta plan, moving over to nature
strong minds acting without fist
letting me dream once again
words don’t hurt anymore
sticks break before they hit
BROKEN GLAS FOR YOU AND ME
horizon is green
my circle round, mind clear, soul flowing
Merwede Guadiana Gleddau Hunter Merwede
all flowing in me
better say no more
broken glas for you and me
It wasn’t just nothing, something did happen
written on leafs
into a poem of water
you need to turn it
to find the moment in the movie
first time on stage in the eyes of some people
please share wide and far
feelings flow down the line
how it was
how it became
a bubble inside grass
circle upon circle
number 40 and 4
connected in 9
each with their own
hard core soil
boiled under pressure
rock upon rock
stick in reverse
web of tiny lines
growth under passion
holding life within life
spiky cloak cover
Going from a poem inside the drop towards the conversation on the ground.
As there is not much more to say i share some great sites to explore:
The idea is not new but old, planting a garden is art, illustrating that garden is art, telling stories about that garden is art, taking a photo of that garden is art, hiding in that garden is art.
why we do what we do, why not

The Land Art ‘movement’ never wrote a manifesto like other art movements. You can therefor find as many different definitions of Land Art as there are land art artists.
The following definition inspired me into a new thinking in 2009:
“Land Art is a conversation with nature/landscape, questioning our (human) relationship with the land and nature, to articulate the experience of landscape and nature.”
Perhaps the conversation between me and nature became literal, in the meaning of actual, by writing with and in the landscape the feelings it aroused in me.
An other much used definition comes from ‘Ben Tufnell’ in his book ‘Land Art’ :
– Land Art is the use of art to enact or articulate a direct, non-pictorial engagement with landscape and nature, or to re-order our response to place, landscape or nature.
The photos here are the documentation of the art but not the Land Art.
When you look at both definitions you see the word articulate, which means so much as expressing oneself ‘clearly’ or speaking ‘clearly’.
Expressing oneself has everything to do with putting in words or show an emotion.
Words do disappear like nature these days.
My response: Nature does not discriminate what has made the land/ground, it doesn’t matter if mining or termites or even earthquakes made the ground. Constant change is a main principle, once gone nature comes back different.
As Land Art urges us to RE-examen our relationship with landscape and nature. Can we re-create landscape/nature or is it once gone, never come back?
I wanted to find out if we can re-create nature within a man made landscape.
To do this I had to let go of box thinking; culture, wild, environmentalism all belong to a box with a certain label. Human-made can be nature. The Land Art should not become moralising and certainly not a new box with attached new labels.
In this way I made ‘Vagdavercustis’ by having a conversation with nature and the landscape. I Re-examine my own relationship with nature and the landscape, seeing what we articulate, express put into words can become nature.
If we walk or if we drive we see and experience landscape.
Wandering along the canals while wondering how to approach The Canal and River trust, I thought it would be good to make something to show them. Willow grows along the canals and rivers naturally, most Willows like wet feet. While looking and thinking this surreal apple comes floating along in the canal. So the idea for Float was born.
Willow is such a brilliant material, you can make so many things with it. It has evolved by creating lots of growing hormones, rooting powder used to be made from Willow. It grows quick back after cutting it back, even when you cut it back to the ground. Willow is on the menu for many animals so to survive all this eating it just grows.
I made a Willow bridge by twisting some Willow branches together, which will grow one day as one. The surrounding branches were cut to make in a floating piece of art. Taking and giving while knotting the bridge together with jute. The knotting can be very relaxing almost like a therapy to work out all your problems in your head by drifting away like the apple going where ever the streaming takes you.
The towpath along the canal has a walking trail called the Weavers Way. So the Willow branches were woven into a kind of fence. An Apple would have been lovely but hard to make into a drifting poem. Now the poem would be a problem which material to use to make it float, a floating poem as part of my many land-art poems. I use slate to write on but is a bit heavy.
The poem became a Haiku with 5-7-5 syllabus in 3 lines.
for a better mood
drifting to solitude
an apple moves
Autumn created one big drifting circus on the canal with fallen leaves. Float with leaves and apple into the water but leaves and apple float faster than willow and slate. The apple became a party for the geese, how to eat a floating apple.
Leaves and float did meet again at the lock, than some final preparations to make the float look more like a boat and the final FLOAT floats away on the canal.
floating land art
The Canal and River Trust and boater will not like to see more debris floating in the water. The propellers on the boat get stuck with all these bits and pieces around them. So Float ended up as a fence and in the future will become a living fence as the Willow starts to grow.
Willow is very good material for free trees to plant as land art for the Bridge project, it is like growing art material for weaving willow sculptures or arty baskets. No matter how much you cut it it will come back and give you more material for art.
So became the beginning of planting land art with poems. Now put it all together for a good proposal towards the Canal and River Trust to get permission to do the work.
The material is free, my time is all for promotion of Wånderlust the floating gallery. I am therefor very hopeful to get the permission, to prevent that all them wonderful young trees will get mowed or trimmed to the ground.
